About this artifact

A lithographic press prints from a flat stone whose image areas accept greasy ink while damp non-image areas repel it. Pressure transfers the inked image directly to paper. The process differs from offset printing, where an intermediate blanket transfers the image; an Austrian press made in 1892 is documented in Beijing’s printing collection.
