About this artifact

Completed in 1754, this instrument adapts the traditional Chinese armillary-sphere arrangement to Qing astronomical measurement. Its interlocking rings and sighting components turn celestial coordinates into mechanical settings. It remains on the observatory terrace; it should not be confused with the Ming instruments later transferred to Nanjing.
