About this artifact

A bronze observing instrument uses rings aligned with the celestial equator and pole to locate stars. Designed under Ferdinand Verbiest, Beijing’s equatorial armilla translates the geometry of the sky into a carefully graduated metal structure. It survives on the observatory terrace as a record of seventeenth-century astronomical instrument making.
